Tommie Bear in Houston, Texas, sleeps quietly on his bed and hardly notices anyone passing by his shelter cage. The heartbroken puppy was returned to Harris County Pets after only a few months.
Tommie Bear was a stray who came into the shelter in June 2020; he had a microchip and was on a six-day contact owner hold. Two people wanted to adopt him, so the dog's first new owner gave him to another family, who either let him run free or returned him to the shelter.
So, four months later, Tommie Bear, who has had little human interaction or positive behavioral reinforcement, is a sad and unhappy pup, knowing he is back at the shelter, surrounded by loud noises, unfamiliar people, and an uncertain future.
"... The adopter believes he gets very protective of the person-owner and may be unsuitable for children. Dogs, particularly this breed, require constant guidance and leadership.
Look at him in this video: he's stunned, depressed, and has no idea what he did wrong...
"It makes me sad and concerned, and that's why I feel he needs a rescue to monitor his adoption this time, because adopters lack experience, and Tommie doesn't deserve to be terminated again in this manner," a shelter volunteer said.
Here are a few shelter notes from Tommie Bear's bad luck:
LAST UPDATE 10/22: BEAR ALIAS TOMMIE KS RETURNED AFTER JUST A FEW MONTHS OF ADOPTION! He needs a new home, and this time it should be a great one! Please share another!
UPDATE 7/9: We're sorry, but it looks Tommie will not be leaving; we're not sure why the email said he was adopted yesterday, but he's now back on adoption hold, so we're still waiting for the final word! I'll call you tomorrow for further details to keep everyone informed.
-UPDATE 7/6: HE IS STILL ON HOLD FOR ADOPTION...he hasn't yet left the shelter, so we'll keep an eye on him until he's adopted.
-UPDATE 6/29: TOMMY IS STILL ON HOLD FOR HIS CHIP, BUT HAS TWO ADOPTORS IN LINE...waiting to adopt him.
The most essential aspect of the narrative is that Tommy was adopted by a loving family that believed in him and treated him as a legitimate part of the family.
"My family and I got our bear a week ago, and he's doing well!" Tommie Bear's new mom stated, "He's a gigantic hugging bear, and his name fits him wonderfully."
I really want to adopt this baby please information
replydeleteI want him to but I live in Canada
deletePoor Tommy, you can tell by the look on his face that he’s sad and feels like he’s left behind. He’s so beautiful and seems to be a wonderful boy. I hope someone comes for him, he deserves the best. Not to be taken back to the shelter. He needs love and care. I have 2 rescues or I’d take him in a second❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
replydeleteWhat is wrong with people who gets a pet. It is so easy for them to just drop him off. The poor dog, his spirit is crushed.can you find a foster home while you keep searching for his forever family??
deleteOmggg I wish I could take him I wish I had the room I have two and really can’t deal with my bully but I can’t do this to him
deleteIs tommy still stuck at the shelter I’m in NJ
replydeleteI will have him im in Manchester tho
replydeleteI don't want to criticise the wonderful work you do but I cannot bear to read about poor dogs being returned to the shelter once they are rehomed. They must be so confused. I really do think that adoptees should be rigorously scrutinised, their backgrounds checked, family life, the amount of time they have to spend training this poor dog and what sort of an active life the family have. Being returned once is bad enough and twice is heartbreaking for the dog. Please, please make sure the next adoptees are really the correct owners.
replydeleteI agree!!
deleteI totally agree..
deleteI agree with you 100%. This precious boy hasn't even had time to decompress let alone get use to his new surrounds.
deleteIf i were closer I'd adopt him and give him the love and life he deserves .
dogs are being killed everyday in shelters for lack of space. if they did what you are suggesting, background check and all that nice unrealistic list of wishes you made out of THINKING.
deletei am not THINKING, i am at the shelter almost daily for 13 consecutive years and i am not a staff member nor a volunteer, i am a dog rescuer and their photographer.
anyways, even as is, when adoptions are easy and take 1 hour from start to complete, dogs are killed everyday for space.
what you are suggesting would so slow down the whole system that 10 times more dogs would get killed cause of space.
the shelter i help recieves 20-70 dogs a day, everyday, 365.
besides very few people would agree to a background check to adopt a dog.
please understand that those dogs to me are not just dogs - they are my everything.
i am talking to you from a reality point of view - not my own point of view.
what you are asking/wishing.... well let me put it this way....
while you are at it, why not ask for immortality (yours) as well?
I’m in Las Vegas And it’s been a year and a half almost 2 years since I lost my pitbull to cancer do you know if he’s OK with a cat I sure would love to try

Looks like Tommy is an Argentine Dogo. We had one years ago and he was the best ever. They will protect you, I think they would be best with a couple or a man. They are very trainable, ours even attended a class and could smell out drugs. I hope he gets a home because they so deserve one.
